Lebu is a city in the south of the South American Andean state of Chile and is located in the Región del Bío-Bío . It has about 27,000 inhabitants (as of 2003). It is the provincial capital of the Arauco Province .

The name Lebu is derived from the Mapudungun language (language of the Mapuche ). Leufu means something like the word river.

The city is located about 145 km south of Concepción on the Pacific . The Río Lebu flows through Lebu. It is the capital of the province of Arauco.

history

In March 1540, Francisco de Camargo reached the coast of Lebu. In 1544 Juan Bautista Pastene explored the Río Lebu. To protect the area from Mapuche attacks, the Spanish built a first fort in Lebu in 1566. In 1604 they named the place Fuerte Santa margarita de Austria . The name Fuerte Lebu was created in 1641.

On November 18, 1824, the Mapuche and Chilean caciques signed a peace treaty and handed Lebu over to Chile. Lebu was officially founded on October 6, 1862 and received city rights on January 10, 1874. On January 25, 1875, it became the capital of the province of Arauco.

On May 22, 1960, Lebu was hit by a 7.3 magnitude earthquake .

Attractions

In the city there are two 3 m long bronze cannons, the Cañones de Bronce from the time of the fortress. You are a national monument. On the coast, Playa Millaneco is a mile for excursions. The long coast is only partially suitable for swimming due to the dangerous currents. In the north of the city there are caves such as the "Caverna Benavides" to visit. In the old fishing port of Puerto Pesquero Artesanal you can watch fishing boats and buy fish.

The Río Lebu invites you to go hiking. South of Lebu is the island of Mocha , which belongs to the urban area, with the Isla Mocha National Park .

economy

Lebu is one of the most important places in the Chilean fishing industry. Around 30% of Chilean fish production comes from the city. In addition, coal mining plays a role, as does agriculture.
