Coronel is a port city in central Chile , 23 km south of Concepción in the Región del Bío-Bío . The port city of Coronel is located on the Gulf of Arauco and has 116,262 inhabitants (2017). The city area is 279 km².

history

Coal has been mined in the Coronel mines since 1849 .

The city gained fame through the naval battle that took place in the waters off Coronel on November 1, 1914.

On May 21, 1960, the city was 50% destroyed by an earthquake .

economy

The city's main industry is the mining and export of lignite . The port facilities also allow very large ships to be loaded. In 2003 an additional 2 million tons of cellulose were shipped. The port has been operating its own container terminal since June 2009. Up to 200,000 TEU standard container units are to be loaded here as early as 2010. The nearby sawmills deliver sawn timber and fibreboard by truck and train, which are then shipped all over the world.
