The Bismarck Tower in Tecklenburg is an 18 m high observation tower built between 1908 and 1909 in the west of the city on a ridge of the Teutoburg Forest . It is named after Otto von Bismarck .

Building history

The forerunner of the Bismarck Tower was a windmill , which was built on the Windmühlenberg in 1851 , but burned out in 1906 after lightning strikes. The remaining mill stump was acquired in 1908 by the Bismarck Association of the Tecklenburg district and used to build today's tower.

According to the plans of architect H. Schierbaum from Gütersloh , the foundation stone was laid on June 30, 1908, the construction with rubble stones was carried out by master bricklayer Lutterberg from Tecklenburg.

The inauguration of the Bismarck Tower took place on August 1st, 1909. Its construction is related to the construction of many other Bismarck towers in the German Empire at the beginning of the 20th century.

In 1912 a Bismarck Hall was built next to the tower , from which today's Hotel Bismarckhöhe emerged .

In 2009 and 2010 the outside of the tower was renovated and reopened.

architecture

Due to the shape of the mill stump, the lower half of the round tower is conical. From a height of about 9 m, eight indicated pillars are attached to the outside, which extend to the viewing platform. The tower tapers in the upper area. A fire bowl was attached to the top of the tower.

Access to the tower is through a front entrance portal with two side columns and a gable roof. Inside the tower, a staircase with 53 steps leads over two inner passages to the viewing area above. Eight approximately square window openings allow a view of the surroundings. The fire bowl can be reached via an iron ladder.
