BitTorrent is the reference implementation of file-sharing client software for the BitTorrent protocol. To better distinguish it from the protocol, users also refer to the client as BitTorrent Mainline .

Before versions 6

The original reference client was written by Bram Cohen in 2001 in the Python programming language using wxWindows for the graphical user interface. Other developers included Ashwin Navin , Brian Taptich , David Chao, and Brad Templeton .

It was released as free software in source code, which enables a variety of similar programs to be programmed for the BitTorrent network. Many derivatives such as BitTornado , ABC and Tribler, G3 Torrent and Rufus or Burst build on these source texts ! on.

More recent versions have been translated into over 20 languages, have a detailed display of active downloads and support encryption of connections. The number of simultaneous downloads is not limited.

history

On July 2, 2001, Cohen released the first public version of the software - suitable to promote the technology at DEFCON . Versions up to and including 3.4.2 (released April 4, 2004) were released in source code under the MIT license . The versions 4.x and 5.x were distributed under the BitTorrent Open Source License, a modified version of the Jabber Open Source License , which, unlike its model, was not certified as an open source license by the OSI , although the FSF did not classified as incompatible with the GPL, but generally classified as a free license. Version 5.3 was released under the GPL .

Since BitTorrent Inc. bought µTorrent , the company has stopped development in favor of µTorrent, the source code of which is not publicly available ( closed source ).

As of version 6.0, BitTorrent is a renamed version of µTorrent.

As with µTorrent, there is also a version in a web browser.
