Bjørkåsen

Bjørkåsen is a small mining settlement and former copper mine in the Norwegian municipality of Narvik , north of the Arctic Circle , about 40 km southwest of the core city of Narvik.

Mining activities in the area ( pebbles and copper ore ) started in the early 20th century and ended with the closure of the pits in the 1960s. Up to 350 people were employed in mining in the area. The mining was carried out to a depth of 450 meters.

Bjørkåsen is the birthplace of the Swedish singer Anni-Frid Lyngstad ( ABBA ).
