Bjørnevatn is a place in the municipality of Sør-Varanger in Troms og Finnmark , Norway . On January 1, 2019, the place had 2543 inhabitants.

geography

Bjørnevatn is located on Lake Bjørnevatnet , about ten kilometers south of Kirkenes . The place is connected to the Norwegian road network via Fylkesvei 8850 .

On the south-eastern edge of Bjørnevatn is the disused iron ore mine Sydvaranger Gruve . From 1909 to 1997 and from 2009 to 2016 the mine and the site were connected to the port of Kirkenes by the Sydvarangerbane .

history

In 1944, around 3,500 people lived in the commune's pits, who were forcibly evacuated from the fighting over the liberation of Finnmark . On October 25, 1944, they were liberated by the Red Army and the then Fylkesmann Peder Holt from Bjørnevatn ruled the liberated Eastern Finland until the German occupation was completely withdrawn on May 8, 1945.
