The bluish- violet paw beetle ( Timarcha goettingensis ), also known as the leathery leaf beetle or small paw beetle , is a beetle from the family of leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae).

description

The beetles have a body length of 8-11 mm. They have a blue-black to black-violet shimmering spherical body. The wing coverts have a slight punctiform structure and have grown together in the middle, which makes them unable to fly. They have powerful antennae made up of spherical links. On each leg they have three short but very wide phalanges, a narrower phalanx and finally a pair of claws. These "thick feet" give the beetle its name. Timarcha goettingensis is more compact compared to the larger related species Timarcha tenebricosa .

distribution

The distribution area of Timarcha goettingensis extends in Europe from southern Fennoscandinavia to the Pyrenees . The species is represented in the British Isles. The beetles prefer poor grasslands and dry grasslands as their habitat.

Way of life

They are sedate, but already on their way very early in spring and can be observed until late autumn. The females usually lay their eggs in summer in bedstraw ( Galium ), on which both the larvae and the beetles feed. The beetle larvae take 1–3 years to develop.
