The Chrysomelinae are a subfamily of the leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae) with around 2000 species worldwide. A well-known representative is the Colorado beetle .

features

Adults

The subfamily Chrysomelinae includes beetles of small to medium size. The wide willow leaf beetle ( Plagiodera versicolora ), for example, is only 2.5 to 4.5 millimeters long, the poplar leaf beetle ( Melasoma populi ) is 10 to 12 millimeters long. The heads of the brightly colored, often shiny metallic beetles are in many species more or less enclosed by the thorax; the mostly eleven-link antennae are thread-like structure and partly thickened at their ends. The tarsi are four-part (cryptopentamer).

Larvae

The short, squat, often brightly colored larvae are covered with warts and thorns to ward off or deter predators. They have clearly developed feet and mostly live on phanerogamous plants. In some species, protective shells made of excrement can be seen that the larvae carry around with them.

Occurrence

The subfamily is represented worldwide with about 2000 species.
