The sky blue leaf beetle ( Chrysolina coerulans ) is a species of beetle from the family of leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae).
features
The beetles are between 6.5 and 9 millimeters long. The cover wings are variable in color and usually have a metallic sheen. The color spectrum ranges from blue, blue-violet, blue-green, blue-black, copper to copper-green. The antennae and legs are the same color as the body. The edges of the pronotum are almost parallel. A series of rough points separates the side bead from the disc. The disc is more finely dotted in the middle than on the edge areas.
Similar species
Chrysomela herbacea is a similar species . It differs from the sky-blue leaf beetle by the cross-wrinkled front breast process and narrow edges.
Distribution and Biology
The sky blue leaf beetle is native to Central and Southern Europe . But it is missing in the British Isles and in the north. The distribution area extends over Asia Minor and Central Asia to Central China .
The species develops on mint species ( Mentha ). It inhabits moist mountain meadows, brook and forest edges and can be found in the mountain or foothills. The beetles can be seen from May to August.
