Phratora vitellinae , also known as the small willow leaf beetle , is a beetle belonging tothe leaf beetle family and the subfamily Chrysomelinae .

features

The beetles are 3.5–5 mm long. They have an elongated oval shape. Their coloring is variable. They are usually shiny metallic bronze. There are also metallic copper or bluish colors, rarely shimmering black. The short antennae do not reach half the body length. The sides of the pronotum are almost parallel, barely noticeably tapering towards the front. The wing covers show a weak shoulder bulge. Several rows of dots run lengthways across the wing covers. The wing covers are less regularly dotted on the sides.

distribution

The species is widespread and quite common in the Palearctic . It occurs in Scandinavia and even in Iceland . Phratora vitellinae is also found in the British Isles .

Way of life

The adult beetles are usually seen between May and September. Larvae and adults feed on the leaves of willows ( Salix ) and poplars ( Populus ), especially aspens .
