Gerhard Grümmer

Gerhard Grümmer (born August 20, 1926 in Görlitz , † September 19, 1995 in Rostock ) was a German biologist , writer , editor and translator .

After attending school in Görlitz , he was drafted into the Reich Labor Service in 1943 and later into the Reich Navy. After the war he was taken prisoner in Great Britain. He made up his Abitur and studied biology and chemistry at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena . He worked as an assistant at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and then at the Ernst Moritz Arndt University Greifswald . From 1955 Gerhard Grümmer worked as a lecturer and from 1958 as professor of phytopathology . From 1970 to 1975 he was professor for phytopathology at the University of Rostock.

His first scientific work was devoted to allelopathy . During the Vietnam War , antidotes to the chemical warfare agents of the US Army were developed with the help of his Greifswald research group . He led operations to neutralize herbicides in Vietnam . He wrote a report about the mission that was translated into many languages.

In the mid-1960s he was entrusted with a visiting professorship in India . After the “third university reform” in 1970, his institute in Greifswald was dissolved. Grümmer was transferred to Rostock. In 1974 he retired due to illness.

Gerhard Grümmer wrote novels, some under the pseudonym Gerhard Meer , and reports. He translated travel reports by Jean de Mandeville (from Middle High German), Washington Irving , John Ross , Robert Edwin Peary and John Franklin (from English). He also wrote popular science books on biology, homeland books on Rostock's history and reflections on the German language, e. B. Collections of rhymes and palindromes .
