Black Castle Public House

Black Castle is a Sham Castle and is now a pub on Junction Road in Brislington, a suburb of the English city of Bristol . The building, listed by English Heritage as a historical building of the 1st degree, is also called Arno's Castle .

history

The Shem Castle was built in the years 1745–1755 and contained offices and recreation rooms, but was originally an outbuilding with stables and a laundry for landlords. The building was believed to have been designed by either William Halfpenny or James Bridges on behalf of local businessman William Reeve. Reeve also owned the Mount Pleasant (now Arno's Court Hotel ) on the other side of the intersection.

description

Black Castle is built with blocks of black copper slag from Reeves foundry in Crew's Hole. The building, built in the neo-Gothic style , is symmetrical and has crenellated round towers at each corner, which are connected by two-storey building lines so that a building with a square floor plan and inner courtyard results. The front and rear wings have larger, crenellated entrance towers with square floor plans and gate entrances. Above the front entrance gate there is a blank sign with a keel arch and on the second floor there is an arch with two centers and tracery . The wings of the building on both sides of the entrance have two windows with Y-shaped tracery under a layer of white stone and inserted white signs. Brightly colored battlements with inset signs are attached to the top of these building wings.

The two front corner towers have inputs from the outside by arcs of two centers and above are conspicuous, white, plain plates, some of which have the shape of crosses, and other in shape embrasures are similar. A shed is attached to the right corner tower and extends at a right angle from the main building. It has a gate in the middle with two centers and similar, small windows on both sides. There are round, flat signs above the white stone layer and the crenellated parapet is raised above the entrance.

Much of the stonework is believed to have come from the demolished city gates of Bristol and from St Werburgh Church, which was rebuilt from 1758–1761 according to plans by James Bridges. Black Castle has been listed as a Grade I Historic Building. Arno's Court Triumphal Arch originally stood in front of Black Castle but was moved about 100 meters further in 1912.
