Black Lion was a British jazz label founded by Alan Bates in 1968. It released US-American jazz musicians who were more in the mainstream jazz , for example Ben Webster , Buck Clayton , Earl Hines , Teddy Wilson , Dexter Gordon , Barney Kessel or Oscar Pettiford , but also Sun Ra , Thelonious Monk (his last recordings as a leader, " The London Collection “1971), as well as Stéphane Grappelli and Abdullah Ibrahim . English jazz musicians such as Humphrey Lyttelton , Alex Welsh and Chris Barber have also been released.

The Freedom sub-label published jazz musicians who were more avant-garde, such as Cecil Taylor , Albert Ayler , Archie Shepp , Julius Hemphill or the Art Ensemble of Chicago . Freedom was later taken over by Arista . In the 1990s, some tracks were re-released by DA Music (Deutsche Austrophon, part of the Pallas Group, Diepholz ).

Alan Bates took over Candid Records in the 1980s .
