The Blackstone Building is a high-rise office building in the center of the Texan city of Tyler . It was built in 1938 in Art Deco style according to plans by the Fort Worth architect Preston M. Geren .

history

The office building, built three blocks north of downtown on Broadway Avenue, was built in the late 1930s during the era of the East Texas oil boom . To meet the urgent need for office space, Tyler- based businessman Edmond P. McKenna financed the construction. The commissioned architect Preston M. Geren created a five-story brick building whose striking corner tower on the southwest side emphasizes the urban location on one of the main streets in the center of the city. The building got its name from the neighboring Blackstone Hotel , which collapsed in 1985 .

When completed, it housed the offices of oil companies , geologists , lawyers and engineers, among others . It also served as the location for the Union Bus Terminal until the 1950s. Today the building is the seat of the Tyler Chamber of Commerce .

The Blackstone Building is one of two Art Deco office buildings in Tyler. On June 14, 2002, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places .
