from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Blue Lagoon National Park is located in the Kafue floodplains 120 kilometers west of Lusaka in Zambia .

He has in its flat terrain, large herds of lechwe -Antilopen and a very large number of bird species (more than 450 were counted). The national park covers 50,000 hectares .

The park was once a restricted military area. In 1960 the World Wildlife Fund bought the area and established two national parks on both sides of the floodplain. He initially pursued animal welfare policy goals. The park is therefore still in the tourist development stage. It offers various shelters and from 2007 also a lodge .

On the opposite side of the Kafue River is Lochinvar National Park . Both parks together form a unit called "Kafue-Flats" (roughly: 'Kafue-Auen'). Upstream is the Itezhitezhi Dam with the Kafue National Park . The reservoir also serves to keep the water level in the Kafue floodplains constant and to flood them regularly.
