history

In 1951 water sports clubs agreed to organize water sports competitions in all disciplines around Porta Westfalica . The water sports clubs from Minden, Petershagen , Porta Westfalica , Bad Oeynhausen and Rinteln as well as the city of Minden joined together in the “Ring of water sports clubs around Porta Westfalica eV” and organized the “Blue Ribbon of the Weser” every year on the first full weekend in September. A biennial cycle (in odd years) was later introduced. The motto of the event was "Sport with a folk festival". The full name is "Competitions for the Blue Ribbon of the Weser".

According to press reports in autumn 2010, the ring of water sports clubs around Porta Westfalica eV has come into financial distress. In 2011 the newly organized Blue Ribbon of the Weser took place with 20,000 spectators in Minden.
