Bleda

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bleda (* around 400; † around 445) was a son of Mundzuk and the older brother of Attila . Together with him, after the death of his uncle Rua in 434/35, he became ruler of the Huns , whose imperial center was in what is now Hungary .

The rulership was shared between the two brothers, but mostly Attila appears as the main acting person. In the treaty of Margus , the related dating is controversial (perhaps 434, but a later date is also possible), the Huns achieved an advantageous settlement with the Eastern Roman Empire . Bleda and Attila then waged war in Barbaricum , but invaded eastern Roman territory again in 441.

Attila probably had his brother murdered in 445 and thus rose to become the sole ruler of the Huns, even though he never ruled over all Huns.

In the Nibelungenlied Bleda appears as a fool . The Hungarian version of Buda serves as the namesake of the former city of Buda , which is now part of Budapest .
