Lead tape

The high-quality workmanship is a bottom hem with an inlaid lead tape.
Alternatively, the lead tape can also be chained to the lower edge of the fabric . A well-known German curtain weaver has chained the lead tape with a golden thread and marketed it as a trademark ("... with the gold edge").
Lead tape consists of small lead balls that are held in a textile hose tape, recently a variant has also been offered in which the lead balls are embedded in plastic. Lead tape is available in different weight classes.
The element lead is toxic and has been banned from many areas of daily life. Since the lead is protected by the hose tape, it does not pose a risk to the consumer when it is used, but disposal can lead to environmental pollution, as old curtains or drapes usually do not think of a possible pollutant content. Therefore steel belts have recently been used as an alternative. However, because of its lower density , it is not as effective as lead tape.
Lead tape in gardening supplies
There is also lead tape for horticultural supplies as a flat, approx. 1 cm wide tape, used to connect parts of plants, for example when processing cucumbers . Lead is used in this case because of its plasticity .
Lead snakes for books
A variant similar to the textile lead tape (colloquially called lead snake ) in which the cover consists of velvet or similar decorative materials is used in museums and archives to cover the pages of open books or manuscripts e.g. B. to gently fixate at exhibitions.
Legal
Lead bands are prohibited according to Regulation (EU) 2015/628 of the Commission of April 22nd, 2015 amending on the basis of XVII Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 of the European Parliament and of the Council on the registration, evaluation, authorization and restriction of chemical substances (REACH) regarding lead and its compounds. Instead of lead, substitute materials such as plastics, other metals, stone / concrete are used or the lead is coated.
