Pencil skirt

A modern pencil skirt

A pencil skirt is a body-hugging skirt with a straight cut. As a rule, the hem is knee-length and tight. Accordingly, the name follows the cut: long and thin as a pencil .

Wearability and use

The pencil skirt is usually an individual item of clothing or part of a costume. The narrow shape can restrict movement. For this reason, there is often a slit in the back or, less often, on one side. Sometimes a fold similar to the godet skirt hem is also used to show less skin. Activities like cycling and climbing ladders can be very difficult with a pencil skirt. It is less likely that this skirt will be blown up by a gust of wind, but the possibility of a so-called upskirt while sitting is greater. This skirt is classically worn with high heels and fine stockings. Also suitable seamed stockings in memory of the classic pencil skirt era of the 1950s.

history

The predecessor to the pencil skirt is the hobble skirt , a fad before the First World War. This floor-length skirt with a tight hem presented a serious handicap.

French designer Christian Dior introduced the pencil skirt in the late 1940s.
