history

The area has been populated since Roman times. The Romans built Hadrian's Wall nearby, remains of which can still be found in the neighborhood.

A house called Dryburnhaugh had been on the site since the 17th century and belonged to the old Blenkinsopp family who also owned the nearby estates of Blenkinsopp Castle and Bellister Castle .

In 1727 the Blenkinsopp family's estates fell to William Coulson through marriage . His heir, Colonel John Blenkinsopp Coulson , had the house built to this day with five bays and two floors. Later in the 19th century the property was further expanded and remodeled with the help of the architect John Dobson .

Edward Joicey bought all of Blenkinsopp's lands including Blenkinsopp Hall around 1876.
