history

2011: debut

In February 2011, Cho PD announced that he would invest $ 1.4 million USD in starting a seven-member hip-hop boy band. He referred to the group as his "Korean Eminem Project". He also announced that the members of this group have been trained by other hip-hop artists such as Verbal Jint, Skull and Rhymer and will make their debut in April 2011.

On April 13, 2011, the debut music video called Freeze! released. Because it was considered too sexy for Korean television, the Youth Protection Commission banned it. Therefore, the song could not be sold to minors and the music video could not be shown on television until 10 o'clock in the evening. On April 15, 2011, Block B had their first live performance on the Korean show Music Bank on KBS. Shortly afterwards, the song Wanna B was released.

The first mini album New Kids on the Block was released on June 23, 2011.

2012: Welcome to the Block , Thailand Controversy and Comeback

At the beginning of January Block B's comeback was announced with the mini album Welcome to the Block . On February 1, the song Nalina was released and was able to place well in the Korean charts. Two songs on the album ( LOL and Did You or Did You Not ) were banned by KBS and the Ministry of Equality and Family due to youth protection violations.

In February 2012, Block B was heavily criticized for an incorrectly translated video from an interview that was recorded a few weeks earlier in Thailand. Members apologized for their wrongdoing through letters and video. Block B's leader Zico also shaved off his hair to express his remorse.

In October 2012 they released their first album called Blockbuster . In this album they distanced themselves from their hip-hop music style. Most of the songs on this album were written and produced by the members themselves.

2013: Legal dispute with Stardom Entertainment and suicide of the former managing director

On January 3, 2013, an article was published reporting that the members of Block B had sued their management and demanded that their contracts with Stardom Entertainment be terminated. The reason given for this was the following: "While the contracts were being signed, members were promised adequate training facilities and facilities as well as payment on the 25th day of the month. However, the company has not paid members since April 2011, almost a year "(Unfortunately it is not clear here whether the unpaid period is one or two years, as the statement seems to be contradicting itself)" It started in March of last year when the members' contracts ended and the outstanding one Payment was calculated. When adding up the income, it turned out that 10 payments for various performances were withheld. "

"The company's chief executive disappeared with KRW 70,000,000 (about $ 66,000) previously collected from the members' parents."

On May 20, 2013, it was reported that the general manager, Mr. Lee, had committed suicide.

On June 7, 2013, the court ruled in favor of Stardom Entertainment on the grounds "that it is difficult to assess whether the company was able to pay the group as planned. The evidence shows that it is difficult to say whether." they deliberately failed to pay for Block B. Furthermore, it is difficult to tell whether the premises, such as studios, living quarters, and educational facilities were properly provided. Based on the written records, Stardom Entertainment cannot be proven to have failed in its duties it is possible that the payment was not properly followed up, but it cannot be proven that this was done on purpose. "

In response to the verdict, Block B members apologized to their fans and announced that they will no longer work with Stardom Entertainment and will work independently from now on.
