Blood of the Black Owl is a Nordic ritual folk and funeral doom band that emerged from the Svart Ugle project in 2005 .

history

The multi-instrumentalist , singer and Chet W. Scott, active as a dark ambient artist under the pseudonym Ruhr Hunter, began experimenting with Funeral Doom in 2004 with the project Svart Ugle. After he recorded an EP with Svart Ugle and released it through Bindrune Recordings , Scott changed the name of his project to Blood of the Black Owl. With this project, he kept the cooperation with Bindrune Recordings for the time being. On the label Scott released the albums Blood of the Black Owl 2007, A Banishing Ritual 2010 and Light the Fires! 2012 as well as a split EP with Celestiial in 2008. The publications received wide reviews and varied acceptance in German, British, Dutch and American reviews. In particular the albums A Banishing Ritual and Light the Fires! experienced wide reception. The assessments varied from the statement that the music was “splashing around” despite good approaches to the rating as “a piece of great music - as long as the listener is willing to open up to the music.” Subsequent publications misplaced Scott himself through the Glass Throat Recordings / Visions label, which was initiated for his projects . With the change to self-publishing, the reception of his publications decreased noticeably, but remained consistently positive.

style

The music is presented as a crossover of funeral doom and ritual and folkloric music related to Norse mythology and pagan culture. The ritual aspect and the noticeable reference to nature come into their own in the use of folk instruments such as jew's harps , percussion instruments and chants, as well as in the use of various samples with a direct reference to nature. The music seems "bleak, slow and heavy". The singing is performed as a chant , whispering and a low growl . The guitar playing is often presented acoustically accentuating, but also performed with strong distortion.
