BlueSpice MediaWiki (BlueSpice for short) is free wiki software based on MediaWiki and licensed under the GNU General Public License . It was specially developed for companies as an enterprise wiki distribution for MediaWiki.

Editions

BlueSpice is published in three different editions:

  • BlueSpice free is a free version and serves as an entry-level solution for companies. It offers functional added value for wiki administrators and users.
  • BlueSpice pro is a business-critical solution with comprehensive functions, a constantly growing number of available extensions and long-term support - updates and patches included.
  • BlueSpice farm is a scalable solution for creating and managing multiple enterprise wikis on a central server.

Both editions are software collections based on MediaWiki. The extensions are from the Hello World! GmbH , its technology partners and independent MediaWiki developers.

Application scenarios for BlueSpice

BlueSpice is mainly used as

Pages can e.g. B. be assigned to an expert. This allows articles to be examined and approved.
Metadata and semantics
Analysis and work with metadata.
Book function

The distribution is a collection of extensions that can be extended with user-specific features or skins. While each individual extension can be deactivated, the BlueSpice editions integrate and standardize the extensions in order to improve the user experience and maintenance.

Licensing

All extensions of the BlueSpice distributions are under open source licenses. Hello world! written functions have been published under the “GPLv3” license since 2018.

history

The German company Hallo Welt! has been working on the development of the open source wiki BlueSpice since 2007 . The project was originally initiated by IBM ("bluepedia") after trying to use MediaWiki there, but did not want to live with the disadvantages.

In 2011 Hallo Welt !, decided to publish their wiki as open source software. The stable version of BlueSpice for MediaWiki was released on July 4th, 2011. Since then, a free download has been available from SourceForge . After the first version of BlueSpice only included a few extensions, today it is a fully functional distribution which, in addition to the latest MediaWiki as the heart of the free version, offers more than 50 different extensions and a completely different user interface. According to independent sources, the BlueSpice free distribution is one of the most popular wiki computer programs for knowledge management in companies.

In the fall of 2013, Hallo Welt! the completely revised version BlueSpice 2. According to the BlueSpice developers, this version aims to open up BlueSpice for freelance developers in the worldwide MediaWiki community, and thus also lays the foundation for many new language versions.

In 2014 BlueSpice for MediaWiki became a project of Translatewiki.net . In January 2015, the developers announced that they would switch to a subscription model.
