Blue Ensign Technologies Limited is a company that was listed on the Australian Securities Exchange until June 4, 2010.

Using a patented technology, the Rendall process , the company was able to extract oil or obtain energy from oil shale . Blue Ensign was founded in 1997 as e.Com Global Limited , a telecommunications and internet technology company that was delisted on the Australian stock exchange in 2001 and sold in 2006. Blue Ensign is made up of shares in Australian Thermal Solutions Pty Ltd. , Queensland Shale Oil Limited and RP International Limited .

Julia Creek Project

According to a study by the US Geological Survey , the world's oil reserves in oil shale are, conservatively estimated, around 2.8 trillion barrels . That is the amount of oil that was used from the late 1800s through 2006. Because of the large deposits, attempts have been made to use this energy potential for a long time. With a patented process, the Rendall process, it should be possible to produce oil on a large scale from oil shale in a petrochemical process. A high energy yield and high profits, lower costs, scalability and little environmental impact are expected from this process.

The Queensland Shale Oil Limited has a 93 km² area at Julia Creek in Queensland , near the Great Barrier Reef . Blue Ensign is planning to build a plant there that will initially produce one tonne per hour to show that this process enables commercial use. In a further development stage, a plant is to be built that can produce around 600 tons per hour; and in the final expansion stage, a demonstration facility is planned to be completed, which should show that 3,000 tons can be extracted economically from an oil shale field of 2 hectares and 30 meters deep. Subsequently, an economic use in the first large-scale industrial plants and a worldwide application of the patent are sought.

Rendall trial

In the Rendall process, oil shale is mixed with a fuel mixed with petroleum. This mixture is heated to about 450 ° C at about 600 PSI pressure in a pressure chamber. This leads to the hydrogenation of oil shale to a solvent. The resulting oil shale gas is used to generate heat or energy.
