Domplatz (hall)
The Domplatz in Halle (Saale) is located on the western edge of the old town. Historically, the place is one of the possible locations of the “Halla” fort, mentioned in 806, and thus one of the earliest settlement centers in Halle. A Dominican monastery has been located here since the Middle Ages , the monastery church of which was converted into Hallesches Dom . In the 16th century the square was enlarged by Cardinal Albrecht von Brandenburg in connection with the renovation of the cathedral.
The edges of the room give the square an almost rectangular shape; the streets that only flow into the corners give the impression of spatial unity.
The buildings that frame the Domplatz include:
- the New Residence with All Saints' Chapel on its southwest corner (built in 1531),
- the Halle Cathedral , founded in 1271,
- the so-called New Chancellery (former archbishop's chamber, from the 16th century; Domplatz 1),
- the Domküsterhaus (built around 1800, Domplatz 3),
- the building of the former university hospital from 1839/40 (Domplatz 4) and
- a large half-timbered house built around 1800 (Domplatz 9).
In the middle of the square was a bell tower in the form of a campanile, completed in 1536 and belonging to the cathedral . The tower was dismantled again in 1541.
In 2012, a fountain was built in the middle of the square according to a design by the Halle artist Horst Brühmann .
