backgrounds

Since 3.5 million yen was the usual budget for works in the "Pinku eiga" genre, continuous color production in the 1960s was beyond the possibilities of directors. Some films were partially shot in color, with color used only for certain scenes. This practice continued until Nikkatsu took over the genre in 1971 with his "Roman Porno" (short for "Romantic Pornography") series. Blue Film Woman was one of the first “Pinku eiga” films to be shot entirely in color.

Jasper Sharp writes that director Mukai's use of color in this film “makes up for the lack of speed by exploding into those over-saturated colors from the first frame ... flooded with prismatic dabs of mostly red and blue and silhouettes of nape feminine Bodies - not dissimilar to a more lysergic acid-inspired version of a Bond opening credits. ”That style is carried on, and Sharp notes that the film is, in sum, a“ highly stylized work ”.

Availability and reviews

In September 2008 it was premiered as part of the "Fantastic Fest" in Austin (Texas) in the United States, in the form of a newly made film copy. Following the screening, twitchfilm.net judged it was "an excellent example of an early pinku eiga [movie] that deserves to be seen."
