Bluewater (German: Blue Water ) is a small town and a coastal suburb of the city of Townsville , in Far North Queensland in the state of Queensland in Australia . Townsville is about 17 miles to the southeast. In the area of the place Bluewater is also the suburb Bluewater Beach (Blue Beach). Bluewater counted 1,040 people in the 2016 census.

geography

Bluewater is approximately 17 miles northwest of Townsville . As the name of the place Bluewater Beach suggests, Bluewater Beach is on the coast of the Coral Sea , while the city of Bluewater is inland on the Bruce Highway , which runs through the town from southeast to northeast.

history

Born in Germany, John Althaus was one of the first settlers in the Bluewater area, who settled there around 1880. Althaus Creek is named after him. The settlement area north of Townsville around the Althaus and Bluewater Creek was overgrown with eucalyptus , acacias and myrtle on sandy soils. However, the soils along the creeks also offered prospects for agricultural use, so more settlers followed.

At the end of the nineteenth century, Bluewater was further populated near the Purono railroad siding . This development continued in 1919 when the railway line was built on the north coast from Townsville to Ingham .

During World War II displaced the Australian Army an infantry brigade and a -battalion in a camp along the Forestry Road in the area of Blue Water. These forces had the order to fend off a suspected Japanese invasion north of the Bohle River. As of May 1942, there were large numbers of Australian, American soldiers and a military hospital north of Townsville.

After the war, many residents moved to the Bluewater area and the place prospered. In 1946 the land was divided along Bluewater Beach, followed by subdivisions into Toolakea Beach and Bluewater Township in the 1950s.

Bluewater's mailroom opened in May 1960.

On January 31, 2019, the community was severely flooded. The heavy rain and the resulting flooding lasted for about a week.

Facilities

Today Bluewater is a community with a range of facilities and attractions. Bluewater Park is a popular tourist destination with free campsites and is close to the Bluewater Store , which is closed to business travelers, Bluewater Creek, and the newly developed urban forest and Vitaparcours. Toolakea and Bluewater Beach are popular recreational areas. There is a boat ramp and waste disposal station at the end of Bluewater Drive.

Other facilities in the Bluewater area include a community center, a girl scout training and camping center , a scout hall and the Bluewater State School . There is also a caravan park and a doctor's office. However, both are located in Purono Park on the Bruce Highway.

The city administration in the town hall operates a mobile library service. Users can visit him Monday afternoon at the community center in Bluewater.
