The wayside shrine in Volkach

The so-called Blutsmarter is a wayside shrine in the upper suburb of the city of Volkach . It stands at a fork in the road between Dr.-Eugen-Schön-Strasse and Prof.-Jäcklein-Strasse.

history

The history of the Blutsmarter is closely linked to the pilgrimage of the Volkach citizens to Burgwindheim . The pilgrimage is first documented in 1646. The Thirty Years' War and the frequent passage of enemy troops triggered a plague epidemic that killed many residents. Since then, every year on the Sunday after the Blood Festival, people have been pouring into the Heiligblutkirche in Burgwindheim in order to be safe from such diseases in the future.

The starting point of this pilgrimage was the wayside shrine from the 18th century . At that time it was set up on the outskirts of the Upper Suburb and has been the meeting place and starting point for pilgrims ever since. The travel blessing is prayed before the ordeal, followed by the first section of the hike to Rimbach . The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation classifies the wayside shrine as a monument under the number D-6-75-174-99.

description

The torture is an altar shrine that was attached to the wall of the building behind. The rectangular base bears the noun sacrum in gold letters IHS . A projecting cornice leads over to the structure, which is formed by four round columns. The wayside shrine closes at the top with rounded ends, richly profiled. The torture bears a golden cross.

The artistic design is first recognizable by the columns with vine ornamentation. A relief as a recessed end of the altar shows the so-called blood miracle of Walldürn . In the center is the crucified one without a cross, below his feet lies the overturned chalice, from which eleven heads of Christ with crowns of thorns flow out. The Eye of Providence is above the relief.
