Hekmans Boô

Boô (also Boo or Boe) is a regional term from the Emsland for a pasture stable.

Sheep and sometimes cattle were housed in Boôen until the beginning of the 20th century . This Boön were mostly of straw , willow and reed construction (thatched). The name is related to the terms Bude, Viehbude, Viehhütte.

The herdsman (Boôherr) lived with the cattle in the Boô. On the Aa there were around 20 Boôen on the German and Dutch sides in the 19th century. The distances between the boons were about 1.5 kilometers.

Despite the deserted people in the Weusten region (Wösten or Ringer Wösten) there was lively contact between the Boôherren. Numerous legends are still derived from these contacts today.

The last Boô, the Willems-Boô in Nieuw-Schoonebeek , was restored in 1972, but fell victim to an arsonist in 2004.
