Nieuw-Schoonebeek is a place in the municipality of Emmen in the Dutch province of Drenthe . Until the municipality reform in 1998, Nieuw-Schoonebeek belonged to the previously independent municipality Schoonebeek .

geography

Nieuw-Schoonebeek is located in the extreme southeast of the province of Drenthe, right on the German-Dutch border. To the north of the village lies the Dutch part of the Bourtanger Moor-Bargerveen International Nature Park , and to the south is the Upper Saxon moor ring nature reserve . The Grenzaa river (Dutch: Schoonebeker Diep), which rises southeast of Twist, forms the border between Nieuw-Schoonebeek and Germany.

Nieuw-Schoonebeek is divided into four quarters: Nieuw-Schoonebeek (775 inhabitants), Oostelijk Nieuw-Schoonebeek (Eastern Nieuw-Schoonebeek, 270 inhabitants), Verspreide huizen Nieuw-Schoonebeek (scattered houses Nieuw-Schoonebeek, 40 inhabitants) and Westelijk Nieuw- Schoonebeek (western Nieuw-Schoonebeek, 215 inhabitants).

history

Archaeological excavations in the area of ​​Nieuw-Schoonebeek have uncovered Stone Age finds that suggest a settlement in the area.

Up until the end of the 18th century, today's local area was pastureland and only a few stables and residential buildings for the shepherds were built on. At the beginning of the 19th century, colonists who mainly came from the Emsland founded the village. In 1849 the Catholic Bonifatiuskirche was built, which existed until the 1960s.

Wilms Boô

Wilms Boô is located in Nieuw-Schoonebeek, an ensemble of buildings originally built in the 17th century as an ox barn with living space. Wilms Boô is considered to be the oldest preserved Boô in the Netherlands , as the half-timbered houses of the shepherds typical for the region are called, and is a listed monument as a Rijksmonument . The facility was completely destroyed by fire in 2004. In cooperation with the Stichting Het Drentse Landschap (Drenter Landscape Foundation), Wilms Boô was rebuilt by 2008 and reopened on August 4, 2008 by Princess Margriet of Orange-Nassau . Wilms Boô has been administered by the foundation ever since.

In the center of Nieuw-Schoonebeek there is a free-standing church tower. This is the remainder of the Bonifatiuskirche built in the middle of the 19th century. The original church building was demolished in the 1960s and replaced by a new building not far from the original site, the tower of the old structure was retained.

Sports

The football club VV Schoonebeek (Voetbalvereniging Schoonebeek) has existed since 1930. In the 1995/96 season, the club reached the highest Dutch amateur class; In the 2016/17 season, VV Schoonebeek played in the 4th amateur class of the KNVB . The women's football department has existed since 1985.

Events

Since the 1970s, a multi-day music festival has been held in Nieuw-Schoonebeek every summer. Until 1999 the event was called Rumah Rock , since then the festival has been called Rumah Live . In addition to regional artists, internationally known stars such as Iggy Pop , the Ramones , Texas and The Cult performed in Nieuw-Schoonebeek.
