Boca Chica is a city in the Dominican Republic . The city with about 22,000 inhabitants is located on the Caribbean side of the island of Hispaniola about 30 kilometers east of the Dominican capital Santo Domingo .
history
Boca Chica was developed and promoted as a seaside resort by Juan Bautista Vicini Burgos at the beginning of the 20th century . The town's heyday was in the 1950s, when the dictator Trujillo ordered the construction of a modern hotel, the Hotel Hamaca . This hotel became famous when Trujillo granted political asylum to the Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista after the revolution in Cuba . After Trujillo was murdered in May 1961, the hotel closed a little later and stayed there for more than 20 years. It was not reopened until 1990.
During the 1950s and 1960s, many wealthy Dominican families built their summer residences along the coast, which were only accessible via private roads. In the 1970s, the area became popular as a seaside resort and became generally accessible through the establishment of public transport.
tourism
The bay of Boca Chica is very popular with domestic and foreign guests, as a reef in front of the bay shields the bay and the water is therefore very calm. The reef forms a semicircle and protrudes from the water surface. Up to the reef, the water is hardly deeper than 1.50 meters. Between the beach and the reef there are two small islands, Isla de Pinos and Isla Matica. Behind the islands is the port that has been expanded.
