The bocage weaver ( Ploceus temporalis , syn. Hyphantornis temporalis; Xanthophilus temporalis ) belongs within the family of weaver birds (Ploceidae) to the genus of the bunting weaver ( Ploceus ).

The species was previously regarded as conspecific with the Cape weaver (P. capensis).

The Latin additional species comes from the Latin tempus 'temple' .

The bird is found in Angola , the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Zambia .

The distribution area includes riparian strips with tall grass, bushes and trees up to 1400 m in height.

features

The species is 15 cm tall and weighs between 34 and 37 g. It is very similar to the Cape weaver, but has a short, powerful beak. The male has golden yellow on the forehead and crown, an olive-green neck, the top and tail are also olive-green. Furthermore, the male has a pale iris , an olive-brown mask and an olive-brown throat patch, in the plain dress the eye is white. The female has a brown iris and olive-green facial spots, it is darker and greener than other weavers in the settlement area.

The species is monotypical .

voice

The male's song is described as a chattering "shreti-shreti-shreti-shret shret", the contact call as "chyap".

Way of life

The diet consists mainly of insects .

The breeding season is in May, between August and October. Boca tissues are polygynous and breed in larger colonies .

Hazardous situation

The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
