The boccalino ( diminutive to Italian boccale , dt. " Jug ") is a wine drinking vessel from Ticino with a volume of around two deciliters. The Ticino country wine ( Nostrano ) is traditionally drunk from the boccalino . Sometimes the wine is mixed with gassosa . In the 1950s it became known throughout Switzerland as a popular souvenir and advertising subject for the Ticino tourist region. He also gave his name to a number of Ticino grottos and Swiss restaurants. In the 1970s, however, it was already out of fashion again because it was considered a symbol of mass tourism.

The jug is a scaled-down version of an earlier Italian wine measure with its characteristic shape. The Boccalino is a bulbous glazed clay vessel with a foot, a handle and a beak. The various painted or shaped decorations can be simple blue and red, ring-shaped ribbons around the belly, the foot or the mouth of the cup, or they can represent specific Ticino motifs (buildings, monuments) or simple wine motifs (grapes and leaves).

Boccalini used to be made by hand in the canton of Ticino and individually painted. The last resident manufacturer closed its production facility in Noranco in June 2008. At that time, 95% of the Boccalini sold in Ticino came from the large Italian ceramic factories.
