The post mill Tornau is a post mill in the town of Stendal in the village of Tornau in Saxony-Anhalt .

history

Post mill Tornau, 1974

It is said that the farmer JD Haacke took over the mill on November 10, 1710 on a long lease . In 1877 the miller Alfred Maeße bought the mill. After a lightning strike, the mill had to be partially renewed in 1882. In particular, it was necessary to renew the damaged vane shaft .

On March 28, 1897, the windmill burned down. It is speculated that it may have been arson. A post mill built in 1701 in Zedau was purchased as a replacement . The mill was transported to Tornau with 23 horse-drawn carts and was rebuilt there in 1897 on the site of the burnt down mill. Parts of the destroyed mill were also used, so that today there are different dates on the mill. In 1900 an oak was felled for the house tree of the mill in Eichstedt .

Flour was ground in the mill until 1953. The milling mill remained in operation until 1972. During a storm on November 13, 1972, the mill was severely damaged, so the wings were bent. The mill could no longer be operated and fell into disrepair. The mayor of the municipality of Insel , Helmuth Zech and the municipal council are committed to maintaining the mill. The windmill was therefore transferred to public ownership on March 1, 1982 . In 1984 repair work began, with help from a mill builder from the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania area . The outer skin and the wing rim were renewed by 1986. In 1991, with a grant from the village renewal program, the wing cross was rebuilt. The machines were put in a working condition so that they can be broken down again. Heinz Grützkau made a particular contribution to maintaining the mill .

investment

The post mill Tornau has a louvre wing cross . The technical facilities are fully preserved. So both the grist and the grist are available. Peeling and sharpening machines and an Askania sifter have also been preserved. The same applies to the typical auxiliary equipment such as transmissions, elevators and an elevator.
