Bodden Town is a city with 10,543 inhabitants (as of 2010) on the Cayman Islands , a British overseas territory .

Bodden Town was founded as the first settlement on Grand Cayman Island under the name "South Side". For a long time it was also the seat of government of the Cayman Islands. It was on a natural harbor protected by a coral reef .

In 1773, George Gauld, a surveyor in the British Navy , visited the town, which was renamed Bodden Town around that time. It is believed that this happened because many residents had the surname Bodden , who formed an important family. At that time around 200 people lived here, around half of the island's population. The governor William Bodden, who resided in Bodden Town, had the first roads, religious sites, forts and ships built during his tenure from 1798 to 1823. Attacks on the city so protected are not known. The first prison was built in the 1830s .

In the course of time, Bodden Town lost its importance. The island was now more likely to trade in the East End or at Hog Sty Bay near George Town , also because the port of Bodden Town was silted up as a result of several hurricanes .
