Bodega Sommos , formerly Bodega Irius, is a Spanish winery in Barbastro , the capital of the Comarca Somontano de Barbastro in the Spanish province of Huesca . The vineyards of the winery are in the Spanish wine-growing region Somontano in the Aragón region . The winery building is a new landmark and is one of the avant-garde buildings in wine architecture .

architecture

The cellar building was designed by the renowned architect Jesús Marino Pascual under bioclimatic aspects. Above ground, the components protrude up to 27 meters above the earth's surface. The cellar building was dug 27 meters deep in order to guarantee the right temperature and humidity for the stored oak barrels and filled bottles, so that a total height of 54 meters can be used economically. In addition to the natural air conditioning, which determines the architecture of the winery, Sommos was equipped with air conditioning in the barrel cellar to regulate the humidity (80%) and temperature (14 ° C). The construction method achieves a primary energy saving of 70%. In addition to the design, another goal is achieved through the height: Gravity replaces pumps that are otherwise necessary as transport force. This conserves grapes and wine and increases the quality. The overall architectural form of the bodega brings three wings together in the central area. The administrative and social areas as well as a restaurant are located there. The entire functional and operational part was located underground and the representative part above ground. The structure of the three aisles is geared towards the processes of cellar management , barrel and bottle aging. The uniqueness of the forms in the architecture is emphasized by the use of stainless steel and glass. Thanks to its size, the massive underground structure also forms an impressive framework for the presentation of the wines. The building is designed in such a way that it is integrated into the hilly landscape of Somontano, which translates as "region below the mountains". The avant-garde design of the exterior continues inside the winery.
