The breed is recognized by the Kennel Union of South Africa (KUSA), which represents South Africa in the FCI . It belongs to the working group in the KUSA system .

Origin and history

The Boerboel is a massive farm dog owned by farmers in South Africa and neighboring countries. To protect the farms from wild animals and cattle thieves, a mastiff-type dog established itself there . In the past, he was never seen as a breed, rather emphasis was placed on function in breeding.

The dog is said to go back to the time of Jan van Riebeeck (1652), who was the first Dutch administrator of the Cape region. The settlers who came into the country at that time brought the largest and strongest dogs from their country of origin with them for their protection. The British later contributed their mastiffs . It was not until the 1980s that the South African Breeding Association raised these dogs to the rank of a breed.

Appearance

The Boerboel is a large, strong dog with well developed muscles. The males must be particularly muscular and the bitches extremely feminine. His movement pattern should be open and flowing. All body parts must be in harmony with one another. The minimum size ( height at withers ) for males is 60 cm, ideal is 66 cm. Bitches are at least 55 cm high, 61 cm is ideal.

Essence

The Boerboel is described in the breed standard as intelligent, trainable and controllable. According to the description, he has strong protective behavior and is loyal to family members. He should be safe and calm, even when approached. If threatened, he should be fearless and courageous. The breed standard points out that training and safe leadership are necessary from an early age.
