Bogon

Bogon is a slang term for an IP data packet in the public Internet that claims of a valid address of the Internet Protocol to come, actually but not yet by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) or an agent Regional Internet Registry has been assigned (RIR) . The set of unassigned addresses is called bogon space .

The term bogon comes from the hacker language and is associated with Engl. related to bogosity , the degree of falsehood , and with Engl. bogus properties , the wrong features. Bogon packets are often used for illegal purposes, they serve no purpose for normal network operations.

Many end users - firewalls and those of the ISPs filter out Bogon data as they are useless and could indicate a faulty configuration of the sender server.

The "bogosity" status of an IP address can change because the IANA and other Internet address administrators often assign ISPs address spaces. Such new awards usually appear on the mailing lists of the network manager and can then from the block lists are removed.

With the introduction of IPv6 , the proportion of unused address spaces has increased rapidly.
