Beanstalk are 2.5-3 m long wooden poles of about 4 cm diameter , for supporting the beans have grown used. Freshly grown, debarked young spruce trunks are well suited as starting material .

In colloquial language , the term beanstalk is also used mockingly for people who are very thin and tall at the same time .
