Bohner ore pit (Heidenheim an der Brenz)
The Bohner ore mines are a group of smaller lakes near Heidenheim an der Brenz in the northern Swabian Alb in Baden-Württemberg .
They were created by mining the so-called floor ore , which was processed in the ironworks of Königsbronn due to its high iron content . The depressions created by mining were filled with water and formed the lake district in its current form. Today, the lakes are a popular destination, especially in midsummer, when they are almost completely covered by water lilies . The Birkel Cave is located about 2 km northeast of it .
Former ore pits are designated as natural monuments under the names Fischgrube, Erlengrube, Ilgengrube, Schmaudersgrube, Stielzieher and Wagnersgrube .
