Life

Boleslaw Gutowski was born on April 21, 1888 in Rzewnie ( Masovia / Poland ). He completed his medical studies at the Warsaw University in 1922. As a physiologist and professor at the Warsaw University and SGGW , he carried out pioneering work in animal physiology and research on neurohormones of the brain and the effect of histamine on the production of gastric acid.

Boleslaw Gutowski published his first scientific work as a third-year student. His first important achievement in 1923 was the essential development of the method of bioanalysis for the extraction of active substances from organs and tissue. This method quickly became the basic method in neurophysiological and endocrinological examinations. In his habilitation thesis in 1926 Gutowski provided evidence of the existence of active substances that control blood pressure in the brain. As head of the Physiological-Veterinary Medicine Chair, Gutowski examined the chemical-hormonal and neurological regulation of gastric juice and pancreatic production in dogs and birds.

The Second World War interrupted Gutowski's research and teaching activities. As a lieutenant in the Polish Army, he took part in the September campaign in 1939, was then interned in the Grazowiec POW camp in the USSR, and then served three years as a doctor in the army of General Anders . After the war he spent two years in England, where he was professor at the Royal (Dick) Veterinary College in Edinburgh as dean.

In the summer of 1947 Gutowski returned to the chair in Warsaw and carried out numerous series of physiological digestive tests on ruminants. The investigations concerned the nitrogen change in the large intestine and in the forestomach of sheep and cattle, as well as the digestive process associated with the breakdown of the raw fiber, after which the non-protein nitrogen was added to the diet instead of the protein.

He also examined gastric secretions, large intestinal motor skills, and the digestive tract of wild animals. Under his direction the method for the removal of the bone marrow was worked out and numerous bone marrow examinations and blood tests of the game were carried out. Studies in the field of the physiology of the reproduction of pigs and silver foxes formed a separate chapter.

Prof. Dr. Boleslaw Gutowski was the founder of the Physiological School , which was widely recognized both in Poland and internationally.

Boleslaw Gutowski died on August 27, 1966 in Warsaw.
