Boleslaw Mikhailovich Markevich ( Russian Болеслав Михайлович Маркевич * 1822 in St. Petersburg , Russian Empire , † November 18 . Jul / the thirtieth November  1884 greg. ) Was a Russian writer, journalist and literary critic. His trilogy consisting of "A Quarter Century Ago", "The Revolution" and "The Abyss" (unfinished) are best known.

Life

Boleslaw Markewitsch was born in the Russian city of Saint Petersburg in 1822 to a Russian aristocratic family of Polish origin. He spent his earlier years in Kiev and the Volyn Governorate . In 1836 his family moved to Odessa, where he attended the Richelieu Lyceum, where he later also studied law. There he began to write his first poems and essays on the side. He also translated some texts from French that were published in the Odessky vestnik .

In 1842 Markevich entered the civil service and in 1843 he moved to Moscow to work in the secretariat of Governor Arseni Andreevich Sakrewsky . He gained notoriety among the upper classes of Moscow and St. Petersburg, primarily, it is reported, for his good looks, humor and acting skills. Markevitsch was always close to government circles and was a close confidante of Mikhail Katkow . All the more he caused a sensation by using real and well-known personalities in his texts, which led to the spread of rumors and was therefore read with interest by the audience. Despite his polemical and controversial demeanor - popular with the Conservatives, hated on the part of the revolutionary Democrats - his literary skills were never questioned. His novellas became famous all over Russia.

Markevich left the civil service in 1875 and died in 1884 in his native St. Petersburg.
