The Bolgartschaj ( Russian Болгарчай for Azerbaijani Bolqarçay ; in the upper reaches: Болгару Bolgaru ) is a river in Azerbaijan and Iran .

The Bolgar-Tschaj rises on the northern slope of the Talysh Mountains . It flows north along the border between Azerbaijan and Iran. The lower reaches of the Mugan steppe in Azerbaijan have mostly dried up. There is the city of Bilusuvar . The actual mouth is on the western shore of Lake Mahmudtschala .

The Bolgar-Tschaj has a length of 134 km. It drains an area of ​​2170 km². The river water of the Bolgar-Tschaj is used for irrigation .
