Beetles from above, below, the side and in front |
Bolitophagus reticulatus is a beetle from the family of black beetles (Tenebrionidae) within the subfamily of Tenebrioninae .
features
The beetle becomes six to seven millimeters long. Its compact body is colored black. The head is only slightly narrower than the pronotum and has bumps. The eyes are almost or completely horizontally divided in two. The eleven-segment antennae arise under a rim-shaped extension of the cheeks.
The pronotum has a wide and flat, roughly toothed side edge. The back corners are pointed and drawn out like teeth. The deck wings (elytres) have narrow multiple interrupted keels, between which there are many elongated dimples. The shoulders are sharply angled.
The species may be confused with Bolitophagus interruptus , but this species is larger and more elongated.
Occurrence and way of life
Bolitophagus reticulatus is widespread at least in Europe. The species populates habitats with tree cover from dense forests to field trees. The beetles can be found on and in dead tinder sponges ( Fomes fomentarius ), especially on red beech , poplar and birch , in which the larvae also develop. Like other species of black beetle, the animals can emit a foul odor when disturbed.
