Bollerborn
The Bollerborn spring is a well system in the municipality of Altenbeken . The fountain with a cross and an inscription plate was placed under monument protection in 1986 .
The spring was known for its irregular discharges until the 17th century. It is said that the Bollerborn or Bullerborn gave up this peculiarity in 1638 and have regularly donated water ever since. Today the spring, which until 1887 drove the so-called Obermühle on the Bollerbornbach, a tributary of the Beke , is used for the water supply.
History and legends
The source has a cultural and historical significance. According to Ortschronik, the 1,100-year jubilee celebration took place in Altenbeken from November 1st to 3rd, 1872 to commemorate the introduction of Christianity in Westphalia. In solemn procession they went to the Bollerborn and erected a wooden cross over the spring. In 1877 this cross was replaced by an iron cross cast by the local ironworks and an iron plate with an inscription was attached to the foot.
According to written records, this spring, which in ancient times was called "Fons Resonus, vulgo Bullerborn", did not regularly donate water. In the past centuries, many scholars have visited the periodical fountain at the foot of the Egge Mountains and written about it. It is reported that after taking the Eresburg (772), Charlemagne advanced to the Weser and camped between Kleinenberg and Willebadessen , where the Karlschanze still reminds of him. He stayed here for three days and destroyed the Irminsul . Because of the drought and aridity of all springs, the army suffered great thirst. Suddenly a spring emerged at this point, so that the army could drink "full". For hours the spring threw out a large amount of water with a great roar and noise and then lay dry again for just as long. It is further reported that the Paderborn prince-bishop Theodor von Fürstenberg visited the spring, known as a natural wonder, with a large retinue in 1577 and held a feast here at the mouth of the spring. While the gentlemen had made themselves comfortable in the shade of the tall trees, suddenly from the mouth of the spring, which had not donated water for a long time, large masses of water with a "thunder-like roar" broke out and flooded the campsite in a few minutes.
