The Bollman Bridge , English Bollman Truss Bridge is a former railroad bridge over the Little Patuxent River near Savage in the US state of Maryland . It is the only surviving bridge with a Bollman girder and was included in its list of historical milestones in civil engineering by the American Association of Civil Engineers ( ASCE) as the first national engineering monument .

history

The first on a range of Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Bridge was built in 1869 and used to its present location in 1887 siding a flat mill built. It replaced an arched stone bridge that could no longer be used due to the redesign of the mill. The bridge was in operation until 1947 without ever being reinforced. The shunting work was finally carried out with additional wagons so that the locomotives no longer had to drive on the bridge themselves.

In the 1960s, people became aware of the bridge's historical significance. The building was repaired and freshly painted. The bridge is in a park and crosses a footpath. On February 16, 2000, the bridge was granted National Historic Landmark status .
