Bolzaneto trial

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the so-called Bolzaneto trial , maltreatment of demonstrators by police officers and security guards was negotiated in the Bolzaneto police barracks at the G8 summit in Genoa ( Italy ) .

During the demonstrations that took place in Genoa in 2001 against the G8 summit, there were numerous clashes between globalization critics and the Italian security forces. Many demonstrators were arrested, around 300 of them held for a few days in the Bolzaneto barracks, which served as a temporary prisoner assembly point. It is said that there were violent attacks, mistreatment and torture against the inmates. Specifically, there are descriptions of forced standing for hours, sleep deprivation, refusal to use the toilet, threats of sexual violence, humiliation, especially in connection with being forced to undress and, in general, massive use of violence. Inmates report that they were forced to sing fascist songs. Doctors and nursing staff are accused of insufficient care for the many injured among the detainees, others of failing to provide help or simply tolerating the processes. A total of 45 defendants, mostly high-ranking police officers, had to answer in court for assault and torture of demonstrators. The main hearing opened in October 2005. In particular, the numerous hearings of witnesses dragged out the proceedings. In the meantime, the prosecution feared that the trial could not be brought to an end because the offenses expire after 7.5 years and, unlike in Germany, the statute of limitations in Italy does not stop during ongoing trials.

On July 14, 2008, 15 defendants were sentenced to between five months and five years in prison for brutal actions against demonstrators, while 30 defendants were acquitted. Antonio Biagio Gugliotta, the officer in charge of security in the prison, received the maximum sentence.

There were several other cases dealing with allegations of police arbitrariness in the context of the G8 summit, e.g. B. with the clarification of the incidents at the Scuola Diaz .
