More than 60 people were killed in the bombing of the US Embassy in Beirut on April 18, 1983 by a suicide bomber. The car bomb , which was a truck loaded with 910 kilograms of explosives, detonated at around 1 p.m. The truck had previously been stolen from the embassy .

A total of 63 people were killed in the attack: 32 Lebanese employees, 17 Americans and 14 visitors or passers-by. Of the 17 Americans, nine worked for the CIA , including Robert Ames . In addition, around 120 people were injured.

A pro-Iranian group called the "Islamist Jihad Organization" with ties to Iran and Syria took responsibility for the attack in a phone call to a news agency immediately after the attack. The anonymous caller said, “This is part of the Iranian revolutionary campaign against imperialist targets around the world. We will continue to fight any imperialist presence in Lebanon, including foreign forces. ”The group had previously assumed responsibility for an attack in which five US peacekeepers were wounded.
