Bomilkar (politician)
Bomilkar , Punic Bodmelqart (Bdmlqrt, "In the hand of Melqart "), was a Carthaginian politician and general in the 4th century BC. Chr.
Bomilkar was born in 310 BC. After the landing of Carthage, the hostile Syracuse tyrant Agathokles of Syracuse in North Africa was elected general by the Carthaginian citizens. His family had long been enemies with that of his fellow general Hanno . The choice of the two rivals was apparently made so that they would control each other. With 40,000 foot and 1,000 mounted troops recruited exclusively in Carthage itself, a battle was waged against Agathocles, with Bomilkar in command of the left wing. However, the army withdrew after Hanno's death and finally fled to Carthage, as Bomilkar was probably not in a position to give the necessary orders quickly after the death of his fellow general. After further fighting in the following years, Agathocles received 308 BC. Reinforced by Ophellas , the Egyptian governor in Cyrene . In the critical phase that followed, Bomilkar attempted to establish sole rule in Carthage with the support of 1,000 foreign mercenaries and 500 Carthaginians. However, in breach of promises he had made, he was treated dishonorably and killed.
