Île Bonaventure is a Canadian island 3.5 km from the south coast of the Gaspésie Peninsula and 5 km southwest of Percé in the province of Québec . Roughly round in shape, the island covers an area of just under 4.16 km².
history
Île Bonaventure ( Bonaventure Island ) was originally one of the springtime fishing areas of New France together with the neighboring island of Rocher Percé . The island was in 1919 due to the Migratory Bird Convention (dt. Zugvögelkonvention ) of 1916 between the United States and Canada to a bird sanctuary for migratory birds made. The province of Québec took over the island in 1971 and founded the Parc national de l'Île-Bonaventure-et-du-Rocher-Percé ( French for National Park of Bonaventure Island and the Percé Rock ) in 1985 . As one of the largest and most accessible bird retreats in the world with over 280,000 birds, the Île Bonaventure is a popular tourist destination in Québec with its boat and island excursions from May to October.

So far, around 293 bird species have been observed on the island that either live there, settle there or are just “passing through”. The most common bird there is the northern gannet . With over 30,000 pairs nesting here, the island is the home of the world's second largest gannet population. Other common birds are the kittiwake and the guillemot . Furthermore, gulls , terns , guillemots , auks , gulls , black-backed gulls , razorbills , cormorants , Ohrenscharben , puffins and cap warbler found.
